Isaiah 52:6 Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore
they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.

And Elohim said moreover unto Moses,
Thus shalt thou say unto the children of ISRAEL,
YAHWEH,

Elohim of your fathers, the Elohim
of Abraham, the Elohim of Isaac, and the
Elohim of Jacob, hath sent me unto you:
this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

Exodus 3:15

So will I make my
holy name known

in the midst of my people
Israel; and I will not [let them]
profane my holy name any more: and
the NATIONS shall know that I [am]
YAHWEH,

the Holy One in Israel.

Ezekiel 39:7

A quick glance through any concordance will reveal that YAHWEH is extremely protective of his name. We are repeatedly reminded that his goal is to have his name proclaimed throughout all of the earth...
Rom 9:17 For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might show my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth. 18 Therefore hath he mercy on whom he will have mercy, and whom he will he hardeneth.

(Psa 106:8 KJV) Nevertheless he saved them for his name's sake, that he might make his mighty power to be known.

Exo 33:19 And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show mercy.
...and that all things are to be done in "His name" and for "His name's sake". Here are only a few examples:
(Ezek 36:22 KJV) Therefore say unto the house of Israel, Thus saith the Lord GOD; I do not this for your sakes, O house of Israel, but for mine holy name's sake, which ye have profaned among the heathen, whither ye went.

(1 Sam 12:22 KJV) For the LORD will not forsake his people for his great name's sake: because it hath pleased the LORD to make you his people.

(Psa 23:3 KJV) He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

(Psa 25:11 KJV) For thy name's sake, O LORD, pardon mine iniquity; for it is great.

(Psa 31:3 KJV) For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.

(Psa 79:9 KJV) Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake.

(Isa 48:9 KJV) For my name's sake will I defer mine anger, and for my praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off.

(Jer 14:7 KJV) O LORD, though our iniquities testify against us, do thou it for thy name's sake: for our backslidings are many; we have sinned against thee.

(Jer 14:21 KJV) Do not abhor us, for thy name's sake, do not disgrace the throne of thy glory: remember, break not thy covenant with us.

(Ezek 20:9 KJV) But I wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted before the heathen, among whom they were, in whose sight I made myself known unto them, in bringing them forth out of the land of Egypt.

(Ezek 20:22 KJV) Nevertheless I withdrew mine hand, and wrought for my name's sake, that it should not be polluted in the sight of the heathen, in whose sight I brought them forth.
God's name consists of 4 Characters called the TRAGRAMATON or the TETRAGRAM, , representing YHWH in Hebrew. The fact that the Tetragram appears almost 7000 times in the Hebrew testament should give a hint as to how important YHWH consider's his name. The overwhelming emphasis on His name throughout the Word, must bring any reasonable man to only one conclusion: whether his correct name is important to us or not, it is EXTREMELY important to Yahweh, and we take His name in vain at our own peril! Again... The sheer volume means that it's importance can't be overestimated.

The Hebrew word "shem" is translated as "name" throughout the scriptures. The Strong's definition of "shem" is as follows.
Strong's # 8034 Shem; a primitive word [perhaps rather from 7760 through the idea of definite and conspicuous position; compare 8064]; an appellation, AS A MARK or memorial of individuality; by implication honor, authority, character: - + base, [in-] fame[-ous], name[-d], renown, report.
This shows that in Scripture, a name represents what separates one from others, a person's honor, authority, renown, and character. This explains why Yahweh often changed his servants names to a new representative name.
Gen 17:5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee...
...15 And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

Gen 32:28 And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
It is also one's "MARK"! This explains the Marking of both Yahweh's and Satan's children in their foreheads with their names as a seal of ownership:
Rev 14:1 (NKJV) Then I looked, and behold, a Lamb standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred [and] forty-four thousand, having His Father's name written on their foreheads.

Rev 7:2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea, 3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads.

Rev 13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: 17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. 18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.

Rev 14:9 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, 10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: 11 And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name.

Rev 17:3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns. 4 And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication: 5 And upon her forehead was a name written, MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF HARLOTS AND ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH. 6 And I saw the woman drunken with the blood of the saints, and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus: and when I saw her, I wondered with great admiration.

Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
The Name is also a "memorial of individuality".
Exodus 3:15-AV And Elohim said moreover to Moses, Thus shalt thou say to the children of Israel, YAHWEH Elohim of your fathers, the Elohim of Abraham, the Elohim of Isaac, and the Elohim of Jacob, hath sent me to you: this [is] my name for ever, and this [is] my memorial to all generations.
Knowing the importance Yahweh places on his name and all that it represents, the question must be asked, "What reason could men possibly give for replacing (and thus helping to obscure) that most Holy name of Yahweh with a title such as "LORD" in the vast majority of translations used today? Looking at the prefaces in these translations, the reason most often cited as the basis for this is "TRADITION", most often stemming from the Jewish practice of not pronouncing the name of YHWH. The Word warns us of allowing vain traditions of men to make the word of God of none effect.
Mark 7:6 He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. 7 Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. 8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do. 9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. 10 For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death: 11 But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free. 12 And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother; 13 Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

Col 2:8 Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ.

1 Pet 1:18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
Although most people today take the third commandment to mean that we should not curse Yahweh's name, it also means that we should not REPLACE His name with a false name such as "the Lord" or "God"
Deut 5:11 Thou shalt not take the name of Yahweh thy Elohim in vain: for Yahweh will not hold [him] guiltless that taketh his name in vain.
The word "vain" in this passage is the Hebrew word is "Shav" which means desolating, vain, vanity, or falsehood. This same Hebrew word is translated "false" in:
Deut 5:20 Neither shalt thou bear false (Shav) witness against thy neighbour.
By replacing YHWH's name in our contemporary translations with the false title "LORD" or "GOD", his name is also taken in vain. Satan couldn't have planned it better to obscure Yahweh's name (or make it "of none effect"). Look at the confusion caused by replacing:
Isaiah 47:4 [As for] our redeemer, Yahweh of hosts [is] his name, the Holy One of Israel.
with

Isaiah 47:4 As for our redeemer, the LORD of hosts is his name, the Holy One of Israel.

or replacing
Exo 15:3 Yahweh is a man of war: Yahweh is his name.

with

Exo 15:3 The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.
and so on, and so on:
Jer 33:2 Thus saith the LORD the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD is his name;

Amos 5:8 Seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name:

Amos 9:6 It is he that buildeth his stories in the heaven, and hath founded his troop in the earth; he that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The LORD is his name.
"THE LORD" is NOT his name! YAHWEH is his NAME! I would not even try to fit all of the references to the importance of Yahweh's name on this page, but just too hammer home this point, here are just a few more examples:
Isaiah 30:27 Behold, the name of Yahweh cometh from far, burning [with] his anger, and the burden [of it is] heavy: his lips are full of indignation, and his tongue as a devouring fire:

Isaiah 42:8 I [am] Yahweh: that [is] my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.
